do you have poutine?

leading up to the wedding day, i would tell anyone who would listen: "after august 8, i am going to eat so much poutine!" or "i can't wait until after the wedding - i want poutine!" of course, i still ate a lot of poutine leading up to the big day, even on the thursday before the wedding, yet the craving did not subside.

during one of my intense poutine searches on the internet (most likely on chowhound), i thought i had come across a nasty looking but tasty poutine at katz's deli. since we were in the area on the monday after the wedding, the boy and i took the opportunity to check it out.

after examining the (very neatly handwritten) menu for what seemed like many minutes, i still could not find any mention of poutine. we were there for so long that an employee came up to us to ask if we needed help. as soon as i saw him, i asked, "do you have poutine?" to which he informed me gently that katz's is semi-kosher so there is no dairy - milk or cheese. aaaah, i replied.

we proceeded to fill our trays with monster sandwiches, pasta salad, fries and gravy, an order of dill pickles, and a soft drink. the food was inexpensive, very tasty, and unbelievably filling. we will be making a return trip! but next time, i will only eat half my sandwich and pack the rest for home. i don't think i have ever had so much salami in one sitting. the boy had roast beef. we finished every bite.

the restaurant reminded me of the peach pit on 90210 and, for a brief moment, i wished that i was in my late teens / early 20s so i could hang out there. then i quickly realized there were no young people at the restaurant except for us. as we finished our food, the boy commented on the presence of cheesecake on the menu and we were confused. maybe a non-dairy cheesecake?
