the great switch

august 29 was a landmark day. it was the day of the great switch.

two days after my official start of using manual settings, the boy and i took a walk to eaton centre with our cameras. we ate and shot and walked and shopped. ever since we got married, the boy has become even more delighted at making silly or mean faces at me. otherwise, he's gotten very used to me snapping candids of him. here he is (1) at a hot dog stand and (2) glaring at me.

i don't really understand it but there is something about this next photo that i love.

we went to chinatown centre and finally tried those freshly made waffles just inside the main entrance. the waffles are composed of little circles that tear off easily. they were more delicious than i thought they would be - not at all dry or bland. YUMSA!

playing with bokeh:

playing around with slow shutter speeds at the eaton centre. unless i want to lug around a tripod, i need to work on being more still.

then we decided to go to henrys. i came this close to buying an ultra wide tamron zoom lens but decided to shop around first.

we went to downtown camera and there was a great sale on the 40d body only with battery grip. we looked at it for a long while and then the boy decided to buy it! i was ecstatic because i've been trying to convince him to switch to canon for ages now - so we'd be able to share lenses and flashes. i currently have three lenses for my dslr (all bought for me by the boy) so i told him i would share them with him. since he was making a big purchase, i decided that i would treat myself to a speedlight, which i've been wanting for a year or two but just never got around to buying.

when we got home, we played with our new toys. he decided to use my (now our) 20-35mm f2.8L lens. i took a side-by-side photo of our cameras, his with the zoom lens and mine with the 50mm f1.8 prime lens - his camera is huge compared to mine and it's not even affixed with a big lens.

p.s. i took the above photo with my new speedlight mounted on my G10 and it worked well. i looooove my flash and super versatile and compact G10 - it's amazing how well this little camera performs. it has nearly all the functionality of a DSLR but without the bulk. i think you can buy auxillery lenses for it but i think i'll stick to DSLR lenses so the boy and i can both use them.
